Who Does She Think she Is?

I’m so excited to be included with such a wonderful group of talented artists. I have 3 examples of my work in the exhibition. We had a great time at the pre-show last night, and hope you can join us for the opening tonight. I am grateful for the support of my fellow artists in the show, family, and friends. Of course, a special thanks for those of you making a home for my art. Your support continues to inspire me.

Water

If you look closely at life, it’s possible to see a myriad of extraordinary miracles in our world. Light, shapes, and color woven together to form a beautiful whole.

The experience of being human, relating to each other, and going about our daily routines can be beautiful, if we pay attention.

As I paint, I try to capture details of life that make everyday experiences special. Sometimes, I choose to abstract certain details, or take a scene, imagining what would happen if I invented shapes and colors to suggest new stories.

I follow these new ideas, and form a different reality – the reality that exists in my paintings because anything can happen in a painting.

Dreams and Visions
Mixed Media

As a visual artist, I collect images. I’ve got my own personal movie going on all the time. I lay colors down telling them what I want them to be. They begin speaking to me and my stories develop.

It’s like lucid dreaming. I’m processing everything that’s happening to me, and answering questions about the world and my place in it. Then, everything comes together to form visual images in my mind.

In my paintings, I attempt to organize all these elements in an interesting way on a canvas, paper, or printing plate. I feed my work, and my work feeds me. I hope to continue this dialogue for a very long time.

I paint to pose questions. I paint to gain understanding. I paint to communicate.

Family Portrait

'Family Portrait' by Allison Hedgpeth

You are invited to view my latest work from June 1 through June 30, 2010 at the Unity Temple on the Plaza.

I continue experimenting with different media. Since stories are always important to me, this aspect continues to be carried on in much of my work. I enjoy suggesting a situation, then letting the viewer participate by empathizing and inventing their own scenarios.

By combining media, I am able to add an element of spontaneity to the work, as I am never sure of the exact effect the combination of a wash, a bit of pastel, or collage will have. This makes the process both fun and challenging. Eventually a dialogue between the work and myself ensues and the work reveals its’ purpose to me, and I hope to the viewer.

I love color and the optical illusion of vibration and movement. I want my subjects to have life

I was notified my work was chosen for inclusion in the 14th annual ‘Cultures Without Borders’ exhibition. My painting, ‘After Dinner’, won the 2D cash award, and 2 other pieces were accepted for the show.

The opening reception for the artists will be held March 5th, 2010 at the Pi Gallery in Kansas City’s Crossroads district. The artists reception begins at 6:00 PM and the awards ceremony is scheduled for 8:00 PM. This traveling exhibition is sponsored by Northeast Arts KC, Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund, Pi Gallery, UMB Bank, and Central Bank of Kansas City. More information on the traveling exhibition can be found on the Northeast Arts KC web site.

Theme
“Culture is the fineness of feelings, thought, tastes, manners, customs, arts, music, ethnic language and architecture. Kansas City has many ethnic and social cultures living within its borders. Each group “carries” within itself customs, symbols and images of its own uniqueness and distinction from that of other groups. At the same time, each group operates within a larger framework of neighborhood, district or economic region.

Borders typically separate and divide rather than include. The theme of this exhibition is to produce a work based on the idea of Cultures Without Borders. Our intent is to challenge individuals to focus on their unique similarities and rich diversities. Works submitted should express an interpretation of your culture.”

Please, plan on joining Allison at the opening on March 5, 2010.
